A holiday home under an olive branch
The bees decided to build their home in the open air: honeycomb hanging beneath an olive branch, pale and perfect.
Sometimes the bees have their own ideas. This time they chose to build a holiday home under an olive branch, right out in the open.
Just look at their work: sheets of pale wax, hexagonal cells all exactly alike, hanging from the branch like lanterns. With no hive around them, you can clearly see how bees build their comb from the top down.
It’s a beautiful sight, but a colony like this is exposed to wind, rain and cold. That’s why, whenever we find wild honeycomb, we try to give the bees a safer home.
